Biography: The combative midfielder Is the Blues' second most successful ever captain behind John Terry. A controversial figure both on and off the pitch, he cost Chelsea a then record fee of £1.6 million, and was twice voted player of the year. His eleven-year Stamford Bridge career ended in 2001 when Claudio Ranieri decided that he wanted to lower the age of the squad. A stormy spell at Leicester ended when he was sacked for breaking a team-mate's jaw. Moved to Millwall where he became player- manager, leading the Lions to an FA Cup Final appearance and into Europe. Went onto manage Swindon and Leeds before landing an executive role at Newcastle United in January 2008 until April 2009.
