Richard Young From the Grecian Archive: Biographical Text
A big, busting forward, nicknamed ‘Tyson’, who started his career with Notts County as an apprentice. He signed a full contract for them in August 1986 and went on to feature in 35 league games, scoring 5 goals.
Young signed for Southend United in August 1987 for a fee of £25,000, but was restricted due to a serious thigh muscle injury, making just five league starts and a further four outings a substitute.
He joined Exeter City in March 1989, for a fee of £5,000, making his debut in a 3-0 home defeat against Cambridge United.
Young, who was nicknamed ‘Tyson’ by the fans, was a member of the Exeter City Fourth Division Championship winning side in 1990, scoring six league goals in the process.
After losing his place in the City team and being side-lined with a back injury, Young turned down a £30,000 move to Hereford United in December 1990. Shortly after, he was involved in a car accident in the early hours in Wiltshire.
Young was sacked by the Grecians for a breach of contract in March 1991 having not reported to St James’ Park or contacted manager Terry Cooper for several weeks.
Mystery surrounds the whereabouts and what happened to Young after that with several unsubstantiated stories being quoted.
